Barbershop Product Display
This was my first “real” project, which started as a conversation while I was getting my hair cut. Now, I’m normally a reserved guy. But Lisa has a gift for getting people talking while she’s working her hair magic on their hair. A few pleasantries very well could have been the end of the conversation. What you need to know about Lisa Haas is not only is she the proprietor of Barbershop Rock in Platteville, Wisconsin; a gifted high priestess of hair; she’s a driven, successful entrepreneur, who also likes to support local artisans and craftspeople. Well, we ended up talking about the renovation of her new location for The Spa Boutique @ BSR, and the first version of DuckHill, in my farmhouse basement. At some point, I was looking at these awesome old theater seats she had in her waiting area. After scrutinizing these chairs, I asked if I could make a custom base for them to accommodate the offset feet. She quickly said yes, and then followed up with “actually, I could use product displays at the new shop.” Off I went to the new shop with a tape measure and notebook in hand. Lisa shared they just didn’t have enough space for their product, and she didn’t want any more traditional woodwork in the room because it had beautiful hardwood floors and oak built-ins. Knowing Lisa was up for something off the beaten path, I suggested we do burnt cedar, or Shou-Sugi-Ban, for texture and color. This would work with the wallpaper in the room and not fight with the original trim. A few quick sketches, some measurements, and we had a design. The first shelves were built and installed within a few weeks, along with cape rails (not chair rails) next to their wash stations. I’m happy to say they liked the shelves so much Lisa asked me to build wider shelves for the wash stations and move the original shelves over to the cut stations. I then built a few more shelves to display sale products. We built two little shelves to sneak between the great bay windows at the front of the shop. Finally, after moving to River Falls Lisa asked if I would design a double deck shelf. I was able to draw it in SketchUp and send her models for review. Since the last time we talked, I am working to wrap up other projects so I can tackle a towel cabinet and deliver it back to the shop in Platteville.
